Treatment
Ivermectin
Rapidly kills the microfilariae in the skin and eyes. It does not kill the adult worms, which can live for 10 to 15 years, which is why treatment is repeated regularly rather than given just once.
Management of Mazzotti Reactions
Some people experience itching, swelling, or discomfort shortly after treatment, caused by the immune system reacting to dying microfilariae. This is usually mild and resolves on its own.
Treatment Note
Ivermectin controls the infection effectively and prevents further damage, but it cannot reverse vision or skin damage that has already occurred. This is why regular treatment throughout the years an adult worm can live matters just as much as any single dose.

Regular ivermectin distribution in endemic communities is the core strategy for controlling and eliminating river blindness.
