Your doctor hands you a printout. Rows of numbers, a few with small arrows pointing up or down, and a column labelled “reference range” that means nothing to you yet. Why This Test Comes Up So Often

The reason is simple. A CBC does not look for one specific disease. What a CBC Actually Measures
A CBC is not a single test. It is a small panel of related measurements, each looking at a different part of your blood.
Red blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit. Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body. Haemoglobin is the protein inside them that actually holds the oxygen, and haematocrit measures what percentage of your blood is made up of red cells. White blood cells. These are the cells of your immune system. A white blood cell count that is higher than usual often reflects your body responding to an infection or inflammation somewhere. Platelets. These are the small cell fragments responsible for clotting. A low platelet count can mean your blood is slower to clot than it should be, which comes up in conditions like dengue fever. A high count can also be significant, though it is often a reaction to something else happening in the body rather than a problem on its own.
Put together, these numbers do not diagnose anything by themselves. What they do is give a doctor a fast, fairly complete snapshot of your blood, which then guides what questions to ask and what to test next.
Making Sense of “High” and “Low”
Every CBC result comes with a reference range next to it, and it is tempting to treat anything outside that range as a problem and anything inside it as fine. The truth is more nuanced than that.
Reference ranges are built from averages across large groups of people. Your own normal might genuinely sit at a different point within that range than someone else’s, depending on your age, sex, altitude, and general health. This is why a doctor looks at your CBC results alongside your symptoms and history, not the numbers in isolation.
